What happened to the Scripps/NDTV deal?
Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. (NYSE: SNI) and NDTV Group ended discussions that would have established a strategic partnership between the two companies to operate lifestyle television networks in India. The companies had announced a definitive agreement on the partnership in November 2009, but were unable to come to terms on specifics of the transaction. In October 2009, Scripps Networks Interactive embarked on a plan to build upon its category dominance in the food, home and lifestyle television programming genres by rebranding FLN as the Cooking Channel. “Food, as a television programming category, has grown significantly, creating a highly promising business opportunity for new programming and related ventures that will, in effect, super-serve the vast number of media consumers who are passionate about food and cooking,” Ken Lowe,Chairman, president and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive, said in describing the decision. While instructional cooking will be one of the main ingredients of the new Cooking Channel, the network also explores food origins, culture and history as part of the programming mix. Why did Scripps Networks purchase Travel Channel?
In short, it was a perfect fit. Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. and Cox Communications Inc. formed a joint venture in December 2009 for the ownership and management of Travel Channel Media, with Scripps’ holding a majority and controlling 65 percent interest in the Travel Channel. Cox retains a 35 percent stake. Travel Channel gives Scripps Networks a third major, nationally recognized and fully distributed lifestyle franchise, with potential revenue upside through increasing ad sales and affiliate fees as well as international opportunities. <Back to top>
The international marketplace provides a major growth opportunity for Scripps Networks Interactive. The company is targeting four wide theaters of operation and has created or seeks joint ventures (JV) with knowledgeable distribution and programming partners in each region. The first JV with Chellomedia, the content subsidiary of Liberty Global Inc., has resulted in the launch of Food Network UK, and Food Network and Fine Living Network in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region. A separate affiliate agreement with leading pay TV operator StarHub led to the launch of Food Network in Singapore.
Regional versions of HGTV, Food Network and DIY Network are available across Canada.
Additionally, Scripps Networks licenses or syndicates programming in more than 170 countries.
